Halloween is fast approaching and dressing up pets has quickly become one of the most popular parts of Halloween. According to the National Retail Federation, over 27 million Americans plan to dress their pets up for Halloween.
Some outgoing, confident pets happily and effortlessly wear Halloween costumes. They seem to love the attention they garner from it. Other pets who are more apprehensive and unsure do their best to communicate that they want no part of donning any clothing.
It is important to take the time to heed your pet’s body cues on wearing outfits. Nix the notion if you put a costume on your dog or cat and they displays any of these signs:
- Pacing
- Panting excessively
- Pawing/clawing at the costume
- Sitting or lying down and refusing to move
If your pet does enjoy wearing hats, coats and other costume clothing on occasion, size up the costume properly. And heed these safety tips:
1. MAKE SURE THEY’RE STILL MOBILE
Make sure the outfit allows him to move easily and does not impair his mobility. A pet costume must fit well and remain securely in place. Tight clothing can impair circulation while an outfit too loose or too big can get tangled and cause the pet to trip while walking.
2. DON’T COVER FACE OR EARS
Avoid costumes that cover your pet’s face or ears to prevent him from seeing and hearing properly.
3. SMALL OBJECTS THEY CAN CHOKE ON
Closely examine the outfit before purchasing to make sure that it does not sport any buttons or other small items that your pet can easily pull out, ingest and trigger a choking incident.
If your pet is game for wearing costumes, consider a couples costume such as Beauty and the Beast, Elvis and Priscilla Presley, Batman and Robin or other famous duos! And don’t forget to take lots of pictures, have fun!
